HEALTHCARE TECHNICIAN

This position has a high degree of visibility throughout the medical center and the general public as a result of direct patient care contact with the Veteran population, many of whom are severely disabled. A display of positive image on the behalf of the VA is critical and required. The incumbent should be highly motivated to seek ways to expedite patient processing, accomplish the VA mission and adapt to the ever-changing world of health care.Under the guidance of the prosthetic/orthotist, fits clients with devices prescribed by physicians. The incumbent measures, fits and repairs appliances, such as corsets, belts, trusses, orthopedic shoes, or simple braces for cases which require standard techniques. The incumbent will also be responsible for assisting in the assembly of components for custom orthotic/prosthetic devices. This position utilizes and manages Prosthetic Inventory Package, analyzes stock levels and usage schedules to determine funds required and execution of budget plans for assigned inventory. The incumbent analyzes, coordinates, and controls management of assigned items of material, computes requirements for assigned items, and uses a range of principles, concepts, and methodologies to determine need, while responding to fluctuations in rates of usage, cost, availability for established suppliers, alternative sources of supply and other similar conditions. This position will require the employee to use credit cards to purchase stock and patient items, and manage inventory using the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (P&SAS) inventory system. Employee will measure, fit, and train patient on use/care of off the shelve orthotic equipment. Work Schedule:

Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
ability to use equipment and tools (such as Sutton Shoe Machine, Vertical Alignment Jig Cast Saw, Pneumatic Tools, Drill Press, Band Saw); knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices in the proper maintenance of equipment and tools; ability to plan effectively, set priorities, and coordinate activities in a clinical setting; ability to communicate verbally and in writing with a diverse group of people; and knowledge of standard computer software packages sufficient to generate a variety of reports, form charts, spreadsheets, and other data formats.OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. Physical Requirements:
Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Duties require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, reaching, carrying supplies, and similar activities. Duties require the incumbent be able to lift. Occasionally it may be necessary to lift supplies and objects weighing as much as 50 pounds. Requires use of proper body mechanics. Incumbent must be able to work in stressful situations. The Lab is busy with patients, phones ringing and sometimes very irate patients who need to be subdued. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
